It is cold outside
the air bites the skin

Inside a family is pushed
down into a basement.
They trip and fall in their
big boots.
The Mother, hysterical,
screams and cries. Because
her son is being bruised,
being broken.
The Father has become deathly calm.
As he walks down the stairs.
But the Daughters are frightened by
memories of these soldiers rough hands.
And cry for Mama and Papa.

In the Basement they are all lined up.
Like dolls on a shelf.
Then down they go.
Each of them.
One by one.

Outside it is still cold.
But gravel now scrapes against
the steel of a shovel.

The family is but hollow shells now,
useless fillers for a hole.

Thump!
Good bye Mother. Good bye Alexandra.
Thump!
Good bye Father. Good bye Nicholas
Thump!
Good bye Sister. Good bye Olga.
Thump!
Good bye Sister. Good bye Tatiana.
Thump!
Good bye Sister. Good bye Marie.
Thump!
Good bye Sister. Good bye Anastasia.
Thump!
Good bye Brother. Good bye Alexei.

Good bye sweet Prince and Princesses.
Good bye poor Tsar and Tsaritsa.
Good bye good Father and Mother.

The earth is pressed in around their bodies.
And the soldiers drink and laugh, HAIL LENIN!

And the scene ends like an Omen:
It is going to be a long winter in Russia.

Not much to say. Wrote this my second year of high school after reading the excellent 'Nicholas and Alexandra'. Here a link to a video version:

I think this is a great poem!

The poem itself is good, I like the structure.

Just some nitpicking on facts:
-The air wasn't cold, it was warm. It was July when they were murdered.
-They were not 'pushed' into the cellar, and they were not 'tripping'. Nobody cried or screamed. They were calm. They didn't know what was going on.
-The children were not "princes and princesses". They were higher in rank than prince and princesses. They were Grand Duchesses and the Tsarevich.

I know. For the most part I was trying for emotional impact with this(which I know really is no excuse but I'm going with it anyway). I would like to write another poem covering these events that are perhaps more factual. Haha thanks though for commenting.
